Ten millions of years ago, Mar Menor sea was just a big bay of the Mediterranean Sea. Through the different movements that created mountains, various underwater volcanos appeared as well as the present islands: Grosa, Del Barón, Perdiguera, Ciervo, Sujeto y Redonda.
The lake that we can see today was created Quaternary period (2 000 000 bC) between Cabo de Palos and San Pedro del Pinatar. It appeared because sediments from the mouth of Segura river were accumulated in Cabo de Palos, Calnegre and Monteblanco.
Mar Menor was totally closed as a lake 2000 years ago and there is communication with the Mediterranean Sea by natural cannals. Besides, it is separated by a big split of land with 14 miles long and between 0.06 and 0.5 miles wide. It is called La Manga del Mar Menor sea.
When did the human come to the lake?
The first signals of human are from Paleolithic period, but most of information and archaeological remains are from Roman and Arabian periods. Arabic people began to create wire netting fences in order to fish like nowadays.
During the reign of Alfonso X, just some fishermen and sherpherds were settled in the lake. The other people were running away from the Berbers attacks. These attacks didn’t end when Charles V was the king and they were even worse due to the Turkish people. Attacks were violents and Charles V decided to build towers in La Manga and Cabo de Palos.
When the 19th Century began, two municipalities were established: San Javier and San Pedro del Pinatar. Likewise, in the 20th Century Mar Menor became the destination of many tourists, who were interested in testing its warm and therapeutical water. For this reasons some years later the well-known Balneario La Encarnación was created.
